Most of the SEMA 2026 PPF news so far comes from film makers showing new color films and a different way to install them. None of it changes the basic choice an Albuquerque driver faces between clear PPF, color PPF and a vinyl wrap. What it does change is the list of questions worth asking a shop.
The SEMA Show runs November 3-6, 2026, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Film brands are using it to put products in front of installers and distributors, and most of what has reached the public so far comes from their own press releases.
What SEMA Is, and Why Film Makers Use It
SEMA describes its show as a trade-only event, with Friday, November 6 as the only day open to the general public in 2026. It’s where manufacturers meet the shops, distributors and media who decide what reaches customers. SEMA says more than 2,200 brands are exhibiting this year, across more than 1.1 million net square feet.
SEMA estimates that exterior restyling exceeds $6 billion in annual consumer spending, a figure that covers grilles, body upgrades, wraps, graphics, lighting and trim together. SEMA doesn’t break out a number for wraps or PPF on their own.
The SEMA 2026 PPF and Wrap News Worth Knowing
The film announcements below come from the manufacturers themselves. They describe what each company said it would show, not independent tests or confirmed availability.
Color PPF and Dry-Apply Film
The most relevant announcement for color PPF is from Avery Dennison. In its SEMA 2026 announcement (a manufacturer press release), Avery said its booth would show PrismaPro Color PPF with live dry-apply demonstrations, and Neo Noir Gloss and Matte Black PPF with daily wet-apply demonstrations. It also listed an all-new Supreme Defense Gloss Lite PPF within its clear Supreme Defense line.
Dry-apply matters because PPF has traditionally been installed wet, with slip and tack solutions that let the installer position the film and then lock down edges. STEK, which introduced a dry-apply color PPF line at SEMA 2025, says that wet method means the solution has to be flushed out before edges and corners can be finished, and that its air-channel adhesive lets the film go on dry. Dry application isn’t new for film in general: Avery Dennison’s own vinyl wrap instructions already call for it.
What none of these announcements show is whether dry-apply changes the finished look or how long the film holds up. Treat it as a change in installation method for now, and judge any film on its own data sheet and warranty terms.
New Vinyl Colors Are Still Coming
Vinyl isn’t standing still. Avery Dennison said it would give a sneak peek at new Ion series colors in its Supreme Wrapping Film line. Color change vinyl is still getting new shades, so a color PPF launch doesn’t make vinyl the older choice.
PPF Demonstrations on the Show Floor
XPEL’s own SEMA 2026 announcement said XPEL-certified technicians would run live PPF installation demonstrations throughout the week, and that its booth would display a Mazda 787B Le Mans race car protected with its ULTIMATE PLUS PPF. Those are XPEL’s descriptions of its own display.
What Isn’t Making the Headlines
SEMA’s New Product Awards drew more than 1,300 entries across 15 categories. None of the winners or runners-up on SEMA’s list is named as a paint protection film or wrap film. The Car Care and Protection category went to Barrel FX.
With the show still running, independent coverage of film launches is limited so far. If you read about a big shift in film trends from this show, check who is saying it and whether they sell the product.
What It Means If You’re in Albuquerque
Color PPF Is a Real Option, Not a Show Car Trick
You don’t need to wait for a new SEMA film to get a color change with a protective layer. Innovative Wraps already offers color PPF in Albuquerque.
Color PPF is a urethane film that carries the color and usually a clear, self-healing topcoat. That topcoat helps light swirls and minor scratches fade with heat. Deeper scratches that cut through it stay. Protection, finish and warranty vary by product, so compare the specific film rather than the category.
Vinyl Still Has the Bigger Color Catalog
Color PPF catalogs are still smaller than vinyl’s. Innovative Wraps lists over 200 color options between Avery Dennison and 3M vinyl for color change vinyl wraps. If a specific shade or texture matters most to you, vinyl will usually give you more to choose from.
The trade-off is what the film is made of. Vinyl is a thinner, PVC-based film that is built for appearance. It isn’t a substitute for PPF when chip resistance is the goal.
New Products Take Time to Reach Local Shops
A film shown at SEMA isn’t automatically available from every installer who carries that brand. Innovative Wraps lists STEK for paint protection film and Avery Dennison and 3M for vinyl. That doesn’t mean any specific 2026 launch is on its shelf. If a film from the show interests you, ask about it by name before you plan a project around it.
Questions to Ask Before You Pick a Film
The show news doesn’t change the basic decision. These questions still do most of the work:
- Protection or looks first? Clear PPF keeps your factory color and helps protect it. Color PPF changes the color and adds a protective layer. Vinyl changes the color with the widest choice of finishes.
- Which panels? A full-body color change and front-end protection are different jobs with different costs.
- How long will you keep the car? Compare the film’s warranty terms, what they cover, and what they exclude.
- Which finish? Gloss, satin and matte look different and can need different care.
- What care routine will you follow? Wash method, coatings and products should match the film maker’s rules.
